WHEN: Thursday, October 12, 2017, 5:00 - 8:00 pm

WHERE: 606 West 122nd Street, Knox Hall Room 207, Columbia University

In this workshop with Prof. Janneken Smucker, participants will learn how to get started using OHMS (Oral History Metadata Synchronizer), an open source, free, web-based tool for making syncing oral history audio with metadata, images, and GPS coordinates in order to provide access, discoverability, and interpretation. OHMS allows an end-user to search the interview’s metadata and optional transcript in order to find an exact moment in the audio.

This hands-on workshop will focus on creating an OHMS repository, syncing transcripts, indexing interviews, and sharing indexes through the OHMS viewer and a content management system such as Wordpress or Omeka. OHMS was developed by the Louie B. Nunn Center at the University of Kentucky. For a general introduction to OHMS, go to www.oralhistoryonline.org.

Janneken Smucker is Associate Professor of History at West Chester University where she specializes in digital history, public history, and American material culture.

In the college classroom, she integrates technology and the humanities, working with her students to create websites, blogs, podcasts, digital archives, and online exhibitions, including the award-winning Goin’ North: Stories from the First Great Migration to Philadelphia.

Outside the classroom, she consults on digital projects for non-profits and museums, and leads workshops on digital tools and strategies, including on collaborating with Zotero, curating oral histories, and reusing content through free and low-cost digital tools.

This event is open to current OHMA students, faculty, and alumni. Light refreshments will be provided.

To attend, please RSVP here by Friday, October 6, 2017 and bring your laptop along with you to the workshop.
