A family portrait: image is back and white, distressed; a black family of seven in their Sunday finest; mother and father are seated in chairs-- the father gazes off to the right of image while the mother looks serenely at the camera. Two young girls (approx. age 4-6) are seated at their feet with childish smirks-- neither looks at the camera; three boys (approx age 8-12) stand in crisp white shirts and neckties behind the parents. The smallest of the boys stands dead center staring directly at, seemingly through, the camera.

I love the idea of a closet representing a child's imagination, because I think a lot of people can relate to the memory of hiding. So, I want to invite the visitor to imagine-- a black boy, in the 1960's-- inside the complete safety and isolation of his closet, where stories are not only a method of survival, but a kind of superpower.
